Vermilion Flycatcher
Pyrocephalus rubinus
Churrinche/Vermilion FlycatcherAfter reevalutating these photos and with some more data provided by Nicolás there is no doubt that Nicolás witnessed part of a courtship feeding. Fraga describes the courtship in his article Notas sobre la reproducción del Churrinche (
Pyrocephalus rubinus) (1977) : “Pairs are formed right away and I observed males feeding their females (courtship feeding) already in the second half of September. To do so, they keep an insect in their bill, as they call the female with monosyllabic notes and sometimes fluttering nervously. In almost of all cases qhen the female takes the insect the male copulates or tries to.” These photos show the offering of food and the fluttering. Neither the female nor the end of the action is seen. But the female was there. In fact Nicolás took a picture of her. And this was the first photographic record of a female of the season. The Vermilion Flycatcher is a migratory bird which comes to the south during the summer to breed. Dolores Fernández sent the first photographic record of a male on 31st of August and Nicolás, the first of a female on 18th of September, which ratifies that males arrive earlier than females. © Nicolás Giorgio

In the afternoon we saw another pair also in the pond but between the Middle Path and the Viamonte entrance. We do not know if we can rescue some photos because they were very far and rather hidden. We know it is another pair since we went out of the reserve through Brasil and the pair we saw in the morning was still there. Claudia y Tito Di Mauro
