Falco peregrinus
Halcón peregrino HJ/Peregrine Falcon JF Halcón peregrino HJ/Peregrine Falcon JF Halcón peregrino HJ/Peregrine Falcon JF Halcón peregrino HJ/Peregrine Falcon JFApparently a juvenile female of Peregrine Falcon. It was very high near the edifice of the ICBC Bank at the Viamonte entrance. It then flew to the RECS area to chase away a Harrison's Hawk which came near. There was a small struggle in the sky. Macá pico grueso/Pied-billed Grebe Macá pico grueso/Pied-billed Grebe Macá pico grueso/Pied-billed Grebe A far too agressive Pied-billed Grebe. On one of the occsions the victim was a solitary White-tufted Grebe (photos above). On another occasion it split a family of White-tufter Grebes with chicks (photos below) and on the last one, it was a pair of Sivler Teal. To chase them out of the territory it seems to activate the outboard motor, it rises and skitters on the water with open wings. When the opponent crosses the border it lands on the water.Macá pico grueso/Pied-billed GrebeMacá pico grueso/Pied-billed GrebeMacá pico grueso/Pied-billed GrebeMacá pico grueso/Pied-billed GrebeFotos © Carlos González Ledo

They are not the exact same since the egg is incubated as soon as it is laid. So the eggs will hatch with the same difference of time as they were laid.

Neotropic Cormorant
Phalacrocorax brasilianus
Biguá/Neotropic Cormorant © J. Simón Tagtachian The Neotropic Cormorant belongs in the family Phalacrocoracidae. Up to 2010 this family together with the families Phaethontidae, Fregatidae, Pelecanidae, Anhingidae and Sulidae were included within the Order Pelecaniformes. One morphological characteristic bonded them all. All of them and only they have the four toes palmated. There are other families with palmated toes such as ducks, but they have only three out of the four toes palmated, remaining one of them free. However, genetic studies have shown that they are not so close as they were believed to be and these families have been rearranged as follows. The Phaetontidae (tropical brids not found in Argentina) were isolated in the Order Phaethontiformes. The Pelecanidae (pelicans, neither in Argentina) remained in the Pelecaniformes and the four remaining ones Fregatidae (fregatebird), Sulidae (boobies), Anhingidae (anhinga) and Phalacrocoracidae (cormorant), have been placed into a new order named Suliformes. These four families are represented in Argentina and but for boobies we have records of the other three in Costanera. CR

Works at Brasil Trabajos-Entrada-Brasil-12-Work progress at Coypu Pond: the dredge is being mounted (basically a pontoon excavator) to begin dredging the pond this week or at the beginning of the following one. Works will start from the Brasil Access. There is no estimated deadline date since working pace (pumping and refilling) are variable. Dredging will be performed transversally in the sense of sedimentation by which depth of water declines from the outer border of the pond (Pto. Madero) to the inner one (Lizard Path). The story of the gallinules begins peacefully when parents were feeding and teaching the chicks to eat (the one of the photo above) at the Brasil Access. I was leaving when I saw a spot-flanked gallinule coming along the promenade and began to fight one of the parents. At the beginning I thought these were domestic problems but the aggression escalated and they engaged fiercely as if they had something to deal with. It clearly seemed a dispute between the males over a territory or women. At first it seemed a cockfight. At a point the female took part and the final battle continued on the aquatic vegetation for almost 5 to 10 minutes. It ended with a short run to the left and with the chicks' father as the winner..
