It is astonishing the number of all-sized coypus seen both in the Duck and Gull Ponds. The coypu may breed two or three times during the year having up to 13 newborn coypus. At the age of six they are fertile. They are predated by caracaras. We have already shown the caracaras in action.
30-04-17 © Ricardo Palonsky

We cannot see what the coypu is eating, but it is obviously a plant since they are herbivores. They cut the vegetal material with their incisors or pull it with their hands which are also used to eat. The orange spot which is briefly seen before diving are the incisors.

We had been checking the shore for the presence of the dark-faced ground-tyrant or the bar-winged cinclodes, two winter birds associated to this environment. As we got to the Meeting Point Adrián saw something moving far on the shore. It was no more and no less the dark-faced ground-tyrant.

This colourful caterpillar belongs in the family Limacodidae. It is typical of this family to move like slugs, that is why the name. They secrete a semiliquid substance which enhances sliding on the substrate. Moths in this family may be very colourful like this one or of very modest colouring. The colourful ones are armed with itching spines or may be toxic or be unpallatable or the three together. Colours are very conspicuous and call the attention of predators but at the same time warn them not to predate on them. The ones wiith a modest colouration have no spines. Being cryptic, that is passing unnoticed is their best weapon.

Silver Teal
14-04-17 © Carlos González Ledo

n field guides this species is treated like a monomorphic one since there are no noticeable characters which distinguish male from female. Anyway, female flanks are scale-like whereas the male's have an irregular barring. The rear third is finely barred in the male and wider in the female.

Patos/Duck Pond
The cattail survived longer in the Duck Pond than in the Gull Pond. A strange situation since the Duck Pond was deeper than the Gull Pond. Since almost a month ago the cattail has notoriously decayed exposing some water mirrors. As for birds we must say it is still almost deserted. There are a few coots, gallinules, jacanas and a pair of coscoroba and a lot of coypus.
The most intense hot days have gone. Let's see how this pond evolves.

Carlos could watch the displays previous to mating which are so typical of swans and ducks. Both peck at water once and again till the female stretches on the water for the male to copulate. Also sinking the female's head by taking her by the neck with the bill.
