Andrés Capdevielle, in charge of the Raptor Rehabilitation Center tells us that this Chimango Caracara is "Dalma". Early in 2014, two chimango chicks were brought to the Center and we called them Dalma and Gianina. They were raised with other chimangoes which can not be realeased

New bird species
On August 1st Diego Bastías found a black bird which was following other icterids. Though it is very similar to the Shiny Blackbird it was bigger in size than a Solitary Black Cacique according to him.
The photo did not allow a precise identification and there were differences of opinion over it. The photo was taken near the coast at Canal Viamonte.
We spread the word to find it and reveal the mistery.

On August 21st, Simón took this shot of the unknown bird and recorded the sound. It was in the Middle Path. As it was perched among branches and hid the bird can not be seen in the video. With this material the bird was identified as Scrub Blackbird
Dives warszewiczi. This blackbird inhabits in Ecuador and Perú. So we believe it must have escaped o have been released.

During winter these snakes are not active, but it seems these abnormal temperatures have caused this individual active. Anyway, we have another register for the month of August two years ago. During these 28 years no human being has been bitten by an urutu pit viper. It is always important to remember that neither these vipers nor any other animal should be approached or touched. Though the week has not finished yet because tomorrow (Monday) is a holiday and some will be visiting the reserve, this male Yellow Cardinal was a sensation. María José Doiny told she had seen it but not photographed.

Without doubt its colour calls the attention as much as its song. And it has been hunted to be caged. This along with the destruction of its habitat has significantly contributed to the decline of the population to the extent of being considered a threatened species.

It inhabits mainly open woods and shrublands. So it does not belong in our ecoregion. Nevertheless, it appears from time to time. Individuals are thought to have escaped or to have been released.

On Sunday we saw a nice pygmy-owl under the sun at the Lizard Path. We took some photos, the last one was about 10:54 when we lost sight of it. Simón suggested waiting for a bit to see if it came back and it did, indeed. At 11:10 we saw it again farther from the road. And it did have a prey! Some sort of frog as can be seen in the picture.

But on Thursday Simón found two coypus. They seem to be in a safe place, where the canal is deep and are protected from dogs, which are their predators. One of them is on a platform which they build to rest and eat.

The coypu is a rodent very well adapted to aquatic life. Here we can only see three fingers of its front leg. But they have four and a very reduced thumb. The hind leg has five well developed fingers and four of them are webbed. All the fingers end in strong claws. They are herbivores.

With white-faced whistling-duck swimming

Francisco González Táboas and Diego Monteleone during a walk organized by Aves Argentinas told us about the Fulvous Whistling-Duck and the Tropical Screech-Owl. The Fulvous Whistling-Duck was a resident bird in Costanera and also bred here. They disappeared when ponds dried and it is the first time we saw them since there is water in the pond. We hope this pair stays and breeds as they used to.
