Second group of butterflies
Sergio Cusano saw the Argentine morpho Morpho epistrophus argentinus on the Lizard Path, but he could not take a photo. Last Saturday we saw it again but on the Middle Path, again no photos taken. Let's be attentive. This is a 10-cm butterfly. Impossible to pass unnoticed. It is pale bluish white with a dark border

Simón discovered these four masked ducklings (afterwards we saw a fifth) and their mother (in this photo) among the giant arrowheads. These marsh plants provide an almost hidden environment, which makes it difficult to find the family. This is the first record of masked ducklings on this site.

Limpkin
10-01-15 © J. Simón Tagtachian

The limpkin is ready to eat its favourite dish, the apple snail. Either visually or probing the mud limpkins look for them under the water. During the day snails stay submerged, that is why we do no see them. But we do find their empty shells piled in the "dining-rooms" or the clusters of eggs lying on vertical or bent surfaces, whether stems, walls or even on a bottleneck floating in the water.

This pair of Silver Teal swam past bobbing their heads and pecking at water in a very fluid dialog. With no further actions they moved on. The male is at the back. One clue is the lateral barred design of the flank which is linear, whereas that of the female is scaled. The other one are the bars on the tail, which are finer in the male than in the female.

Absent during 2014 the Lake Duck came back to the pond. It feeds diving into water and can stay submerged for a while. The position of its legs is farther at the back, which makes it a good diver but a poor walker. It has a stiff tail which is normally kept erect when at rest. The underparts are whitish and there are no marks on the wings. Its light blue bill and its black hood may lead us to mistake it for the Masked Duck, which has recently appeared in the pond, too.

Before the drought the three coot species were very abundant. The drought wiped them from the reserve. As ponds were filled with water they came back but with ups and downs. This is the first large group we see. Most of them are White-winged Coots but for a couple which seem to be Red-gartered Coots
